6082 is the European structural aluminum — widely used across the EU for the same applications where US engineers specify 6061. They have similar chemistry (Al-Mg-Si), similar strength, and machine similarly. But 6082 has more silicon and slightly higher strength. If you're sourcing from Europe or working with EU-based design teams, you'll encounter 6082 — and knowing the differences matters.
| Property | 6082-T6 (EU) | 6061-T6 (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Silicon content | 0.7-1.3% | 0.4-0.8% |
| Magnesium content | 0.6-1.2% | 0.8-1.2% |
| Manganese content | 0.4-1.0% | ≤0.15% |
| Tensile strength | 310 MPa | 310 MPa |
| Yield strength | 260 MPa | 276 MPa |
| Elongation | 10% | 17% |
| Hardness | 95 HB | 95 HB |
| Density | 2.70 g/cm³ | 2.70 g/cm³ |
| Machinability | Similar to 6061 (good) | Good |
| Weldability | Good | Good |
| Extrudability | Slightly harder than 6063 | Harder than 6063 |
Key differences:
The regional split explains the existence of two near-identical alloys:
Practical implication: if you order "6061-T6" from a European supplier, they often ship 6082-T6 and call it equivalent. For non-critical applications, fine. For specification-sensitive work (AMS, aerospace), either specify explicitly or request verification.
EU-designed vehicles use 6082 for structural castings and extrusions. If you're sourcing EU OEM replacement or matching parts, 6082 is the default.
When 5052 is not strong enough but you still want moderate corrosion resistance. 6082 with proper anodize is used for marine deck hardware in EU markets.
European rail (cars, couplers, structural components) specifies 6082 in various tempers.
When the design calls for extruded profiles with higher strength than 6063 can provide, 6082 splits the difference.
| Temper | Description | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 6082-O | Annealed, softest | Formed parts before heat treat |
| 6082-T4 | Solution heat-treated, naturally aged | Moderate strength, good formability |
| 6082-T5 | Cooled from hot working, artificially aged | Extrusions |
| 6082-T6 | Solution heat-treated, artificially aged | Standard structural (like 6061-T6) |
| 6082-T651 | T6 with stress-relief stretch | Thick plates, precision machining |
For machining, 6082-T6 or T651 is standard. For forming or welding operations, use T4 and heat-treat after fabrication.
