§ 01 / HOW

How 6082 compares to 6061

Property6082-T6 (EU)6061-T6 (US)
Silicon content0.7-1.3%0.4-0.8%
Magnesium content0.6-1.2%0.8-1.2%
Manganese content0.4-1.0%≤0.15%
Tensile strength310 MPa310 MPa
Yield strength260 MPa276 MPa
Elongation10%17%
Hardness95 HB95 HB
Density2.70 g/cm³2.70 g/cm³
MachinabilitySimilar to 6061 (good)Good
WeldabilityGoodGood
ExtrudabilitySlightly harder than 6063Harder than 6063

Key differences:

  • 6082 has slightly higher silicon → marginally better strength after heat treat
  • 6082 has added manganese → better corrosion resistance in certain environments
  • 6061 has slightly higher elongation (more ductile)
  • For most practical purposes, they're interchangeable
§ 02 / REGIONAL

Regional availability

The regional split explains the existence of two near-identical alloys:

  • 6061: dominant in US, Canada, Mexico, parts of Asia. Standard in AMS, ASTM, SAE specifications.
  • 6082: dominant in Europe, Australia, parts of Africa. Standard in EN specifications.
  • 6063: global — preferred for extrusions (architectural, heat sinks) — easier to extrude than both 6061 and 6082.

Practical implication: if you order "6061-T6" from a European supplier, they often ship 6082-T6 and call it equivalent. For non-critical applications, fine. For specification-sensitive work (AMS, aerospace), either specify explicitly or request verification.

§ 03 / WHERE

Where 6082 is preferred

01

European automotive structural

EU-designed vehicles use 6082 for structural castings and extrusions. If you're sourcing EU OEM replacement or matching parts, 6082 is the default.

02

Marine applications with higher strength needs

When 5052 is not strong enough but you still want moderate corrosion resistance. 6082 with proper anodize is used for marine deck hardware in EU markets.

03

Rail and transport applications

European rail (cars, couplers, structural components) specifies 6082 in various tempers.

04

Heavier structural extrusions

When the design calls for extruded profiles with higher strength than 6063 can provide, 6082 splits the difference.

§ 04 / TEMPER

Temper designations

TemperDescriptionUse
6082-OAnnealed, softestFormed parts before heat treat
6082-T4Solution heat-treated, naturally agedModerate strength, good formability
6082-T5Cooled from hot working, artificially agedExtrusions
6082-T6Solution heat-treated, artificially agedStandard structural (like 6061-T6)
6082-T651T6 with stress-relief stretchThick plates, precision machining

For machining, 6082-T6 or T651 is standard. For forming or welding operations, use T4 and heat-treat after fabrication.
