ASTM A1008 cold-rolled carbon steel — low-carbon (typically 1008 or 1010 grade) sheet stock in 0.5 to 6 mm thicknesses. The workhorse of sheet metal fabrication: brackets, chassis, cabinets, weldments, pre-painted enclosures. Affordable, easy to cut, easy to bend, easy to weld.
Cold-rolled steel (CRS) is what you want for most sheet metal work. Hot-rolled (HRS) has a scaly surface, looser tolerances, and is typically used for structural plate over 6 mm thick.
| Property | Cold-rolled | Hot-rolled |
|---|---|---|
| Surface finish | Smooth, paintable | Scaly mill finish |
| Thickness tolerance | ±0.05 mm | ±0.3 mm |
| Dimensional stability | Good | Fair |
| Cost | ~15% higher | Lower |
| Best for | Visible sheet metal parts, precision brackets | Thick structural plate (>6 mm) |
Raw CRS rusts quickly — you need post-fabrication protection:
For indoor dry environments, oil + phosphate is sufficient. For outdoor, galvanize or powder coat. For corrosive environments (marine, chemical), switch to stainless.
