§ 01 / COLD-ROLLED

Cold-rolled vs hot-rolled

Cold-rolled steel (CRS) is what you want for most sheet metal work. Hot-rolled (HRS) has a scaly surface, looser tolerances, and is typically used for structural plate over 6 mm thick.

§ 02 / WHAT

What it needs post-fabrication

Raw CRS rusts quickly — you need post-fabrication protection:

  • Powder coating: most common; full RAL colors; adds 3 days to lead time; $3–10 per sq ft
  • Zinc plating: for fasteners and concealed parts; 5–15 μm; adds 5 days
  • Pre-galvanized (G60/G90): buy pre-coated sheet; saves post-processing; limits thickness options
  • Paint: wet paint for large structural; less durable than powder coat

For indoor dry environments, oil + phosphate is sufficient. For outdoor, galvanize or powder coat. For corrosive environments (marine, chemical), switch to stainless.
